Periodically Speaking with Kweli Journal

There’s this series called “Periodically Speaking”, held at the New York Public Library. On June 14th, Kweli Journal was to be the featured journal. A short story of mine had recently been accepted by Kweli and I was invited to join the panel. The audio is finally up on their website!

The panel includes Kweli founder Laura Pegram, contributing editor Naomi Extra, writer/contributing editor Nicole Vasquez, and poet/photographer Rachel Eliza Griffiths.

The theme of our talk was “There Are No Strangers: Using Technology to Close the Distance, Instead of Closing the Gate”. In addition to discussing our own work and other work published by Kweli, we discussed two photography books:

1.) Nothing Personal by Richard Avedon, text by James Baldwin

2.) A Kind of Rapture by Robert Bergman, Introduction by Toni Morrison

It’s a fairly long session, but it’s terribly interesting and the readings by Nicole and Rachel are wonderful! For a chuckle, I recommend listening in at 75:23–that gives you an idea of my maturity level.

Kweli is a beautiful online journal that publishes writers of color. They’re always looking for new material. My story “The Recurring Pint”, which features Andi Rowe, can be found on the site. There’s a lot of great poetry, prose, and photography there. Enjoy!
